On finances we found that people fretted more about those fixed costs such as council and utilities bills than they do about mortgages but could it be that many of our respondents are some way through their mortgages or are not burdened with a mortgage to start with. Energy bills are a major concern with nearly two-thirds of respondents saying they are watching costs ‘a lot more’ than twelve months ago.Turning to the environment we found there was enthusiasm for re-cycling in general and a significant number of people recycled their plastic waste despite the lack of doorstep collection. On the issue of global warming the idea that it was caused principally by human activities got your vote by a margin of two to one, however many of you didn’t vote on this so we really should have had a ‘not sure’ box for you to tick. If pushed to select a measure that could have a major impact on global warming, nuclear power produced the most polarised response coming either top or bottom. The anti-nuclear lobby won this vote.
On crime there was more fear about safe streets than some might have expected and on education more praise for primary than secondary schools though people usually thought the secondary school they attended was good.
Finally on health it was no surprise that people wanted children's services improved and accessible on the Southport Hospital site. Any walk-in facility being planned for less serious children’s accidents should be well equipped and staffed with doctors as well as nurses.
We will be informing police, schools, the local NHS and government departments of the outcome, of how Southport families in 2008 feel about their situation. Once again may thanks for your participation.
