HEALTH EFFECTS OF CHEAP ALCOHOL

Local MP John Pugh warned of the increasing dangers of alcohol binge drinking in a parliamentary debate on the 'Health Effects of Cheap Alcohol.'  This follows shocking recent reports showing that the whole Sefton area has a huge problem of alcohol abuse.

He told parliament: "This Christmas, in my town, as surely in every constituency, there will be the usual sad litany of alcoholic excess of one kind or another: anti-social behaviour, fights, road accidents and possibly deaths."

The MP put much of the blame on a hard-drinking culture which he argued was having a corrosive effect with women adopting male drinking habits. He called for a cultural change in our attitudes but also criticised supermarkets for selling alcohol as a loss leader.

"Many young people get into a habit of what is called 'pre-loading'- drinking supermarket booze before going out    The drinks themselves are often higher in alcohol content than they used to be . People aren't actually drinking more in pubs than they used to."
