MORE SUPER-FAST BROADBAND FOR SOUTHPORT
Friday, 23 December 2011
Southport is getting improved access to BT’s super-fast broadband networks as they are rolled out across the country. As part of the roll-out, another 184,000 homes across the region will be connected to the network, taking the total number up to over 1.7million.
Amongst the broadband hubs now connected to the super-fast network is the Churchtown hub in Southport, meaning that local residents will enjoy improved and faster internet connections. Download speeds will range from 40Mbps through to 300Mbps depending on the type of connection, speeds much higher than the UK average of 6.8Mbps.
Local MP John Pugh welcomed the news, saying:
"This is excellent news for Southport’s residents and businesses. Our firms will now have access to higher-speed internet with greater capacity at lower cost, which will help to boost their competitiveness. They will help to facilitate high-quality video calls, meaning people won’t have to travel for meetings. Faster upload speeds means sharing of files amongst colleagues will now be quicker and easier than ever before.
"There’re also considerable benefits for our homes as well. There should be no need for arguments over who gets to watch the latest shows on iPlayer any more, something I’m sure many will look forward to! HD films could be able to be downloaded in around 10 minutes, a whole CD in 30 seconds and a song in 2 seconds, meaning that access to the latest films and music should improve dramatically."
