MP warns of depression dangers
Wednesday, 14 December 2011
With days darkening and economic forecasts gloomy, local MP John Pugh is asking constituents to be on the alert for signs of depression amongst friends, family and colleagues.
Recent statistics produced by Lundbeck Ltd, a pharmaceutical company, show that the rate of depression amongst Southport people is 11.57%, higher than the national average of 8.87%. The statistics also showed that emergency admissions to hospital at NHS Sefton for depression stand at almost twice the national average.
John Pugh called on members of the public to keep an eye out for symptoms of depression, saying "Christmas can be a difficult time of year for many and I would ask everyone to pay close attention to their friends and family for any indication of depression. Recent events have shown us that even the unlikeliest of individuals can be suffering in silence, sometimes with tragic consequences. Men in particular are susceptible to bottling up their feelings and I would like everyone to be on the lookout for any signs that might hint at depression in those they know so that action can be taken.
"Being on the lookout for the tell-tale signs is especially important at present, with the economy in continued trouble and people concerned about their futures. Only through keeping a watchful eye on those closest to us will we be able to help those whose conditions might otherwise go unnoticed."
