Southport Library Success
Sunday, 07 March 2010
The long-running Liberal Democrat fight to ensure that Southport has a temporary town centre library looks set to have succeeded.
At a meeting on the fifth of March, Sefton Council agreed on a location for a temporary library while the current building closes for refurbishment for three years.
John said, "Its taken dogged determination to get to this stage. When we were out petitioning in the cold and wet of last winter it was clear just how important residents of all ages think the library is. There was also complete disbelief that the other two parties on the Council would even consider not having one for three years. This is a huge victory for people power."
The Council unanimously voted to house the library in the ground floor of the Tulkleth Street office. This means there will be capacity for a medium sized lending service, a small reference library and IT facilities. There will also be room to enable family storytime and rhyme time sessions to take place.
There are a few legal and planning negotiations to complete, but the temporary library service should be open by June.
