Vince Cable MP welcomed to Southport
Monday, 01 February 2010
Vince Cable was welcomed by members of the Southport Liberal Democrats and the local business community when he visited Southport on Saturday.Vince became famous for his predictions about the financial crisis, when Gordon Brown was still claiming to have 'abolished boom and bust'. He was recently voted the most trusted politician by the general public, and is known for his strong belief in the need to restructure the banks.
"Vince's economic knowledge is second to none," said local MP and Treasury team colleague, Dr John Pugh. "it was great that members of the local business community had a chance to ask their questions. The majority of the concerns raised by those who attended centred around the danger of heading back into recession and also about how the power of the banks can be curbed."
Vince opened by paying tribute to his colleague and Treasury Team colleague John Pugh, and proceeded to give a talk on the state of the economy and the possible danger of tipping back into a recession.Vince compared the UK to a heart attack patient who had suffered a crash and was now on life support.
The floor was then opened to questions. Topics covered included small businesses, personal debt, the threat of being tipped back into recession, quangos and health and safety regulations.
He talked about the need for a fairer tax system, more help for small businesses and the importance of not making quick and brutal cuts to public spending.
