Crunch Time for Library

MP John Pugh is right behind the fight to have a temporary library service, ahead of a crucial Cabinet meeting tomorrow (Thursday) and is calling on all councillors to listen to the clearly stated views of the public saying "This is almost the last chance for the council to make the right decision."

"Southport Library is such a hub of activity for young and old alike and is a central part of our town. It's clear that this refurbishment is needed, but it is impossible to think of the town without a central library service for almost three years.

"I worry especially about the impact of the complete removal of this service on both elderly and the young. Elderly people visit the library sometimes as often as several times a week. It is an integral part of their social life. They will find it difficult or impossible to travel to outlying branches. Young people, too, down to pre-school children depend on our town centre library."
 
At an area Committee meeting held on the 6tth January, resident Paddy McNeish presented a petition with 7,000 signatures calling for the issue of a temporary library to be referred to tomorrow's meeting.

Liberal Democrat Councillors proposed in November that a temporary library should be established in the Market Hall. This has been so far resisted by Labour and Conservative members.

Dr Pugh added: "A mobile library simply won't do. There is still the possibility of progress and sensible options to be worked up but I know there is an unwillingness of the council officers do the necessary work unless the councillors together give a clear steer. That's what we need on Thursday!

"If,  following the decision of Labour and Conservative members, the council is finding £5 million for repairs of the Netherton Activity Centre which are not so time-critical, the money should be on the table for a proper, workable temporary library."
