MP Hails Residents' Revolution
Sunday, 01 November 2009
Residents of leasehold properties saddled with unfair service charges, unexplained utility and repair bills and management companies who won't reply to letters, flocked to KGV last week to find out how they could fightback and stand up for their rights.
The advice surgery at KGV was organised by John Pugh MP with members of the Leasehold Advisory Service based in London.
"There is no doubt", said John Pugh , "that many blocks of flats in Southport are experiencing major problems. With the collapse in the housing market many management companies are feeling the pinch and putting the squeeze on their residents. The problem is so widespread that we asked the experts from the Leasehold Advisory Service to do a mass teach in on service charges, tenant rights and how residents can take over the management of their own block."
After a morning of presentations explaining the rights of leaseholders individual appointments took place with groups of residents from all over Southport.
"This is a resident's revolution," said the MP , " but though there are many very savvy residents who just need the right advice to help them stand their ground, there are also many elderly people who are frightened by extortionate demands and pay up. The best companies don't hassle residents but some have got form in this area "
This event was one big step forward in the fightback.
