Monday, 13 May 2013

Southport MP Dr John Pugh and Birkdale Lib Dem Councillor Iain Brodie Brown have pincered Sefton Council for their discriminatory attacks on the people of Southport. They both appeared on BBC's Sunday Politics with Cllr Brodie Browne interviewed on Lord Street and John Pugh MP in the TV studio in Salford.

John Pugh, commenting on the Coalition Government's legislative agenda outlined in the Queen's Speech said:

"It shows that Liberal Democrats are making a real difference in Government, with bills focused on jobs, growth and fairness, and an agenda that shows the Liberal Democrats are keeping the Government anchored firmly in the centre ground.

“Liberal Democrats understand that building a stronger economy is about more than just the important work of cutting the deficit.

“In Southport, we're giving real help to people through policies like the Pensions Bill – which will make saving for retirement simpler and fairer. We're investing to help businesses grow and create jobs. And we are building a fairer society, helping parents, protecting communities and protecting our environment.”

Pugh urges Government to commit to standardised cigarette packs in the wake of shocking new child smoking figures

Thursday, 02 May 2013

Southport's Lib Dem MP, John Pugh, is supporting a call for the Government to bring in a law to require plain, standardised tobacco packaging after an estimated 817 young people started smoking in his local area during the last 12 months.

At a joint meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Smoking and Health and on Heart Disease, Dr Pugh heard about the successful introduction of standard tobacco packaging in Australia and also from a UK shopkeeper who supports the measure.

Exactly one year ago, the UK Government launched a public consultation on tobacco packaging but has not yet issued a response. In the twelve months since the start of the consultation, more than 200,000 children have taken up smoking across the UK children 817 have started to smoke in Sefton equivalent to 16 every week.

Dr Pugh said: “It is sad that so many children in are being tempted into taking up smoking every day.

“ I was initially sceptical about standardised packaging proposals but cigarette packs are designed to make smoking look cool and attractive yet the reality is a life-time of addiction, illness and premature death. If we are to stop a new generation becoming addicted to this deadly habit we need to act now. Australia has led the way with standard cigarette packs which show the gruesome truth about smoking. The UK can, and should be the next country to implement this life-saving measure.”

"Check your pay slip” urges John Pugh

Wednesday, 01 May 2013

Today is pay day for millions of people across Britain, which means they will receive their first pay slip since the Income Tax personal allowance was raised from £8,105 to £9,440. When Liberal Democrats came into power in 2010 this was just £6,475.

Brownfield success story

Monday, 29 April 2013

At long last derelict land has been turned into a social housing scheme. Local Lib Dem Councillors and I celebrated the official opening by planting a cherry tree. The scheme named after an old Birkdale brewery has had its ups and downs over that last few years. Councillor Iain Brodie-Browne provides more details on his blog here.
